Men's Amateur Tournament Wrap-up

The 99th Annual Men's Amateur wrapped up on Sunday at the Highlands Golf Course. What a great tournament it was and an exciting finish for first and second place. With a birdie putt on the 72nd hole Grant Rennie edged out Brian Laubman by 2 strokes to take home the trophy and GC prize.

With over 80 entries the field was very competitive and made for exciting golf. Friday at the Goose was an extremely challenging day with weather conditions playing a huge factor in the scoring. The greens were lightning quick and demanded excellent putting skills.

Stony Plain with sunny weather and great course conditions and played fantastic. The scoring was on average 8 strokes less than Friday. Players all remarked on the great greens and playing conditions.

Highlands provided a great course for the final day. The weather was excellent and with everything being equal the fans witnessed some great shot making. Drew Horn,  through consistent play over 3 days, won the 2nd Flight, but it was the battle between Brian, Grant and Alex Rakowski in the last group that drew the most attention. The deciding factor was an eagle putt on the 17th green that gave Grant a 1 shot lead going into the 18th.

Both Brian and Grant were on the green in two on 18. Brian left his putt just short and Grant sank a 20 footer for birdie and the 2 shot win.

The Edmonton Golf Association thanks all the golfers that entered, Goose Hummock, Stony Plain and Highlands Golf course for providing fantastic playing conditions over the 3 day event. Special thanks to the AGA rules officals, Fran, Linda and Gord for their hard work and long hours. Also to the volunteers, thanks for making this another successful event. The final awards bannquet completed a very successful tournament.

Next year will mark the 100th anniversay of the Men's Amatuer event in Edmonton. The EGA hopes to see you playing next year.
